Launch of the Financial Literacy Challenge

Mombasa, 21st May 2022

Junior Achievement Kenya in partnership with The Teachers Service Commission, Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Mombasa County Government Department of Education & ICT, and Prudence Foundation officially launched the 2022 Financial Literacy Challenge; Cha Ching Program. This Program was scheduled for 21st May 2022 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at Khadija Primary School.

Financial Literacy Challenge is the culminating event of the Cha-Ching Program which brings together involved pupils to showcase their knowledge and skills gained through the program.

The launch of the Program in Mombasa gave an opportunity to students in the Coastal region to get hands-on experience on how to use and handle their money better. The main objective of the event was to create awareness of the Program in the schools and psyche up the pupils for the Challenge with the amazing rewards. In addition, to encourage financial literacy amongst children through the Cha-ching program.

Patrons from twenty-plus primary schools were present and went through training in the Cha-ching Financial Literacy Program. Detailed discussions were done in groups and the Prudence Foundation representatives took them through topics in regard to the program. The training opened up the minds of the teachers to understand more.

Mr.John Msusuva, the guest speaker, from the Mombasa county government highlighted the importance of financial programs in the curriculum for the pupils. Prudence Foundation, Ms.Stella Wathani, spoke on the need for teaching pupils money matters at a young age and presented the students from Guru Nanak Primary School with Cha-ching Membership cards that got them excited about this year’s cycle.

We officially launched the Financial Literacy Challenge by marking our dates for 16th July 2022 for the Contest.

Launch of the EY STEM App Program

Nairobi, 30th May 2022

Junior Achievement Kenya in partnership with Ernest & Young Global Limited officially launched the EY STEM App Program, which was scheduled for 30th May 2022 from 8:00 am – 9:00 am at Nova Tatu Girls School.

The EY STEM App is a gamified application designed specifically for girls, aged 13- 18, and aims to inspire them to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) study and career paths. The STEM App gives them a hands-on experience within the four STEM tracks, opens their mind to possibilities, and aims to empower girls. The students were taken through a live demonstration of how to effectively use the App.

The Program in High schools gave an opportunity for female students to discover more opportunities in STEM. It features activities focused on science, such as climate change; technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI); the future of work and skills that may be required for future, yet-to-be-defined jobs; and inspirational stories of women in STEM. The app is sponsored by the EY Women in Technology program. The STEM App will be launched to 10 schools, 20 students each targeting 200 girls.

In the pre-pilot stage, we did a soft launch with two schools, Nova Pioneer Tatu Girls and Kibera Girls Soccer Academy. The Principal of the school, Dr. Nyaboke Nduati mentioned the importance of STEM to students & Executive Director of Junior Achievement Kenya Mr.John Wali talked to the girls about the current status of STEM in Kenya.

The EY team, Ridhi Kumar- Project Consultant EY India, Pascal Guera- Project Manager EY Switzerland, and Lilian Maruhi- Assistant Manager EY Kenya helped the students understand how the EY STEM App would help in the current statistics. Patrons of the two schools and twenty students from each school were also present.

We got the chance to hear from two students of each school, who detailed their experience while using the application. The students mentioned the lessons that they had learned throughout which meant understanding the SDGs, the Future of work around the world and the Superstar stories of women who are currently in STEM Careers.
